Slope deformation is a world wide phenomenon. It can exist
either naturally or due to human intervention. Because of its
wide spread it becomes very dangerous to human life or human
structures build up on areas prone to sliding. Slope stability
analysis can be assisted by cooperation between geological,
geophysical and geotechnical investigations. There are many
different numerical techniques have been utilised in the fiels
of slope deformation, such as Liminting Equilibrium, Finite
Element, Finite Difference etc. The last mentioned approach has
been applied to create a software named FLAC to investigate a
case study of slope deformation occuring in the area of Mosty u
Jablunkova in Eastern part of Czech Republic. The results of

this study indicated a slope stability at minimum chesion of 5
kPa and 19 friction angle. Because of road cut that has been
excavated in the slope at lower than the above-mentioned values
a model indicates the clay bed is bulging out. When trying to
establish equilibrium within the slope with road cut the
cohesion of the clay bed was raised gradually up to 15 kPa where
slope stability was indicated by the model

Detailed mineralogical and geochemical studies on horizons of
volcaniclastics from the Lower Miocene (Upper Eggenburgian,
Eggenburgian-Ottnangian, Ottnangian) and Lower Badenian deposits
of the Carpathian Neogene Foredeep in the Czech Republic are
presented in the article. Both Lower Miocene and Lower Badenian
volcaniclastics are products of acid volcanism. Their volcanic
material was derived from the calc-alkaline volcanic suite of a
volcanic arc. the priincipal differences between Lower Miocene
and Lower Badenian volcaniclastics were recognised both in the
content and distribution of Rare Earth elements (REE). Lower
Badenian samples generally have a higher content of REE, clearly
defined negative Eu-anomaly and generally a steep REE profile.

This can ve explained by a source of volcanic material from a
more differentiated magmatic source than Lower Miocene
volcaniclastics. Although the Lower Badenian volcaniclastics
form a relativly more homogenous sequence than the Lower
Miocene ones, some geochemical criteria can be used for their
correlations (especially REE distribution patterns). Recognition
of various tephra horizons can be used for the very detailed
correlational studies of the almost uniform "tegel" deposits

peat deposits. Challenges to Chemical Geology. - Praha: Český

A digestion procedure used for 210Pb dating of freshwater peat
is described. Additions of concentrated HCl and HNO3 are
followed by electroplating of 210Po and 208Po on silver discs at
60 C. The digestion was preformed on 3 grams of subsamples from
a peat core colected at the Rybárenská slať Bog (southern Czech
Republic), each subsample representing a 2 cm thick vertical
increment. Alpha spectrometric measurements on one set of 18
silver discs was performed in two different laboratories 3 and
12 months, respectively, after the polonium was plated out. The
a activity counting 3 months after the digestion yielded CRS
dates as well as peat accumulation history similar to Sphagnum
peat bogs which had been studied in the northeastern USA by
Wieder et al. (1994). The repeated a activity counting after 12

months yielded erratic values due to advancing oxidation of the
surface of the silver discs

of landslides in the Jeseníky area, Northern Moravia, in the

the Czech Geological Survey were mostly brought about by the

Quaternary sediments, adverse geological and geomorphological

In the Jizerské hory Mts. situated in Northern Bohemia the
evaluation of factors influencing negative changes on the
environment of the Jizerské hory Mts. is carried out in the
years 1997-1998. In the year 1997 a comprehensive re-evaluation
of input data, as well as new polluted soil and water sampling
and Quaternary sediments mapping was done. Evaluation of surface
water pollution is given. The ouput of the project in the year
1998 will be a general risk assessment of the area and the most

Effects: The Gardsjön Roof Project. - Chichester: John
Wiley&Sons, 1998., 1998- S. 25-70.: 20 obr., 11 tab., 4 s.bibl.
This chapter contains a description of the main features of
the small catchments at Gardsjön used for the Roof project and
related NITREX project. Descriptions are given of the
topography, geology, climate, hydrology, soils and vegetation.
The elemental contents of various ecosystem compartments are
tabulated for the three catchments and an assessment made of
their relationships to other European and North American
ecosystems. The location of lake Gardsjön on igneous, rather
acid bedrock with very thin soils of local origin and a mineral

composition having slow to normal weathering rate renders this
south-west Swedish forest land sensitive to acidification.
Mature (80 to 100 years old) forest with Norway spruce (Picea
abies (L.) Karst.) and some Scots pine (Pinus sylvestri L.)
predominate while in the ground layer dwarf shrubs (mainly
Vaccinium myrtillus L.) mixed or alternating with several
species of mosses and the grass Dechampsia flexuosa constitute
the most abundant vegetation elements in the catchment area
surroundings Lake Gardsjön. Generally podzolic soils of sandy to
silty loam with only a small clay content occur interspersed
with typical folisols on steep slopes or ridge areas and peaty
soils in the valley bottoms of the larger catchments. Annual
precipitation amounts to c.1150 mm and runoff is c.580 mm, the
climate being pronouncedly maritime with February as the coldest
(-2.7 C) month and July the warmest (+16.0 C). Some
precipitation occurs on almost 150 days of the year, though the
typical rain intensity is fairly low (1.5 mm h-1), ussually

lasting for several hours and caused by cyclonic weather
systems. The acidified soils have large amounts of exchangeable
acidity and aluminium, while stores of exchangeable base cations
are modest, resulting in a comparatively low base saturation.
Acid deposition has resulted in substantial amounts of sulphur
and nitrogen being stored in the soil profile, and the future
response of the different fractions of these elements will be of
importance for the recovery from acidification when loading
decreases. The presence of numerous small sub-catchments,
relatively high rainfall and good homogeneity between catchments
make the Gardsjön area suitable for manipulative catchment
